20111103_Egypt_1392 Cairo Citadel

The Citadel was begun by Saladin in the late 12th Century CE. In 1805 Mohammed Ali won control of Egypt and began to transform Egypt into an industrialized nation. The mosque was built in the Turkish style between 1824 and 1848 (but the domes had to be razed and rebuilt in the 1930's). Mohammed Ali died in 1849 and was buried in the mosque, rendering it unsuitable as a place for worship going forward.

Historic Cairo was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
