1996 #256-11 Kunming Stone Forest of Luan

Unique rock formation in the Stone Forest.

The weathered “trees” of the Stone Forest are uplifted limestone and dolomite that formed on the bed of an ancient sea starting over 270 million years ago. This dramatic karst topography has been the home of the native Sani People of Yi for more than 2,000 years and figures in their legends.

[The Shilin UNESCO Global Geopark (China) was designated in 2015 and is part of the South China Karst UNESCO World Heritage Site inscribed in 2007.]
