On the stables of Nikko Toshogu the most famous representation of the proverb, "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil." The monkeys have names in Japanese: Mizaru, Kikazaru, and Iwazaru, literally "don't see, don't hear, don't speak." The carving was made in the 17th century, by then it was already a well known proverb.
