Wheatear, Penninis (St Mary's, Scilly), 3-Oct-07
The white rump is the most distinctive feature of Wheatears. Normally the white extends further down the sides of the tail (so the black appears more T shaped). This pattern is more like the very rare Isabelline Wheatear, but the bird resembled Northern Wheatear in every other respect so that was never an option for this bird. Coincidentally, a possible Isabelline Wheatear was reported at the same location later in the day, but sadly that one (here) proved to be a Northern Wheatear too.
