I have noticed lately a few things that have greatly concerned me about the SL fashion industry. While I am fully aware that racism is alive in our RL so it is inevitable that it will be in SL, I am floored at the constant shunning of brown skinned models and models of color in beauty contests and on ads for major labels. It's beyond frustrating that this stigma is still so prevalent even in a virtual world.
While I have not personally been affected by this stigma, I have seen it happen to close friends and that is enough for me to want to speak up about it.
I have had success as a dark skinned model and as an albino African American model but after what I have seen happening recently I have decided to convert back to being dark skinned. If you loved my look, my style and wanted me for your runways and print jobs as a pale model, you should still love me as a dark one. If you don't, fine. But I am black no matter what shade I wear and my style and work ethic doesn't change because my skin tone does. Let's see if I lose jobs because of the color of my skin. Let's see if I get asked to blog designs or join agencies when I am super dark chocolate. Last I checked, beauty came in all shades and women of color can sell just as much product as any other skin tone, race or culture.
And finally, to end my rant, for any designer that I feel doesn't represent women of color in a positive light or give equal opportunities to all models, I will not be wearing or blogging your designs.
Special thanks to the lovely Asia Rae for this amazing photo<3
