A childhood memory, a surreal image and yet so familiar
My dear neighbour ante (aunt) Jans, who sometimes had small flatfish ('scharren' - 'dabs' in English) on the clothesline in her back yard, hanging to dry. They tasted a bit like marmite, I thought.
Unfortunately tante Jans is no longer alive. Instead, I went to visit mrs Gravemaker - Wijker in Egmond aan Zee's retirement home, "Prins Hendrik Stichting". We never met before but the receptionist thought she could be nice to talk to. I thought she was very sweet. She said she was suffering from early Alzheimer's (which is why she now lives in that home) so she had trouble remembering things. She loved to talk about the past. While remembering she switched to the local dialect: 'Derps'. This dialect has a lot in common with the English people around Liverpool speak, as fishermen of both places worked together a lot on the North Sea. Listen to the way she pronounces the 'W. 'Derps' is mostly spoken by elderly people and is disappearing.
