This is the result of a star going supernova about 20,000 years ago. Usually the things we see in the sky have been around for eons longer than our species has even existed, but this object is special in that it is bright, apparently large, and occurred recently enough that if the supernova was found to appear in a cave painting it would not surprise me at all.
