Flash in the (cannon) Pan
Firing the cannon at the Battle of Moore's Creek Bridge re-enactment.
234 years ago a brigade of 1,500 Scots charged across a greased bridge and up a slope waving claymores. They were met by 1,000 Americans with muskets and 3 cannon.
The Scots were led by Donald MacDonald, a veteran of the Battle of Culloden 30 years earlier. The lesson of Culloden was that you don't take on artillery with broadswords. McDonald didn't learn that lesson very well.
