Felt Owl Necklace
This funky art necklace is an original, one-of-a-kind wearable work of art! This owl was hand-stitched by me onto sunflower yellow felt, using 7 different colors of thread. The owl was then backed with a layer of russet felt and a final layer of willow felt. The felt is 30% wool and 70% synthetic. The owl has two beads for eyes which have been artistically wrapped with thread. Because felt is so thick, and sewing thread is so thin, I used many layers of thread in a labor-intensive process to build the form of the owl. The result is a fun, whimsical piece of fiber art, in which I "drew" the owl using thread.
This was my first attempt at creating fiber art. While I created a relatively small piece and turned it into a necklace, it could thus be considered craft - but I think it is still also art. I stitched the owl without a template or design, just making it up as I went along. It was a fun challenge. I quickly learned that stitching with regular sewing thread on something as thick as felt meant that I would need to make many, many stitches before the design was even visible! Next time I'll probably use embroidery thread, but I do appreciate the delicate thinness of regular sewing thread. I also bought some muslin, on which the thin threads will appear more easily.
All in all this was a fun project, and I really look forward to getting my hands in more deeply with thread, fabric, and beads!
