Magnolias 2

Roberta's magnolia tree ... this is its last year, as it is being overwhelmed by shade trees ... and the cost of moving it to an open spot is more than we are willing to pay.

This is the Saucer Magnolia, Magnolia x Soulangiana hybrid ... it is sometimes called Japanese Magnolia, although both of its parents are natives of China.

If you're a horticulture geek, you probably know that this hybrid is technically Magnolia denudata x Magnolia liliiflora ... that Pierre Magnol was a 17th-18th century physician and a Director of the Royal Botanic Garden at Montpellier ... and that the hybrid was created and first brought to bloom in 1827 by Etienne Soulange-Bodin, a retired Napoleanic cavalry officer.
