Sunset, Agua Rico
The Aguarico River, Sucumbíos, Ecuador, taken from the Cofan settlement at Zabalo. We had spent the day traveling up the black-water Zabalo river by eco-canoe and had been unusually lucky with the weather. As we returned to the village, the clouds started to roll back in, just as the sun was starting to hit the tops of the trees. The canoe was a little too shaky for good photography, although it would have made a great vantage-point. Instead, I waited until we got back and headed for a small clearing on the bank at the most downriver of the village's houses. A little patience paid off with a number of nice shots before fear of tripping over something unpleasant in the dark sent me back.
The river is a dull muddy brown in daylight, so the orange glow from the sunset definitely adds something. I like the way the sun lifts the edges of the clouds on the right, hinting that it's still daylight in the canopy, even though the darkness under the trees says 'bedtime'.
