As the River Runs Softly on By...

Viewing the scene, I couldn't help but think about how strange it really was. The fact that the paving of the LA River has provided a canvas like this for all of these artists, and the fact that only a century ago, this river was wild, untamed, and home to plants and wildlife. Surreal, indeed.

During the weekend of September 28-30, hundreds of artists and crews from around the country descended upon the Arroyo Seco Confluence in Highland Park, a section of the Los Angeles River, for an officially sanctioned collaborative mural project called "Meeting of Styles: LA".

Erin was in town, and the two of us drove around for hours (yes, hours), searching for the confluence. We braved the completely confounding highways and byways of Los Angeles, refusing to give up, and were eventually rewarded with a truly surreal sight: hundreds of incredibly talented artists painting the walls of the river in broad daylight, cars and trucks littering the basin, boxes of paint strewn about, music blasting.

One of these days, I'm going to have to stop by again soon to document the confluence, now that the painting has been completed...
