Peterhead Prison Waggon

This originally six-celled waggon on display at at the marvellous Maud Railway Museum once ran between the hard-labour prison at Peterhead and Stirlinghill granite quarry. The prison provided cheap labour wanted by the Admiralty for building a Harbour of Refuge. The Scottish equivalent of the roads chain gangs so beloved of gangster films. Armed guards patrolled the quarry bank.
