Golden Yellow on the Jungle Floor. Globba marantina, Kuning Hutan, Kerandangan Gorge, Lombok, Indonesia

    Newer Older

These days the dark jungle floor of the Kerandangan Gorge was lit up by small splashes of Golden Yellow. Jungle Yellows - Kuning Hutan, in Malay or Indonesian. Wonderfully curious articulation of the flowers...
This Ginger's flower does not usually produce seeds. The plant reproduces asexually by way of bulbils. And yet it produces flowers! Why that's the case, I have no idea. Ah! The wonders of Nature!
The Botanical Cabinet (1818-1833), published by that redoubtable horticulturalist family, the Loddiges, in its first issue gives a description and prints a fine engraving by George Cooke. Conrad Loddiges, too, is more than a little perplexed about the reproduction of this Globba. He can't explain it, and his description veers into very psalmody: "So diversified are the ways, with which our Creator has endued the vegetable kingdom with the power of multiplicity and replenishing the earth. His beneficient hand has formed all, and directed everything to the wisest and most gracious purpose..."
Not much of an explanation, but what Loddiges writes does allow us a glimpse into that naturalist's Deism.
