Common Goldeneye drake - 2

(Bucephala clangula) Belmont Pond, Kelowna, BC.

In the winter I get lots of COGO shots on Mission Creek where a raft of them winters. In March, however, one or two often show up in our little pond. Last year, it was first a female who spend a couple of weeks waiting for her mate to show up. This year, so far (like one day) it's a solitary drake. Will be watching to see if he bides his time or sets out for other ponds. I told him about the single female at the Fish Pond on Hall Road.... Must check to see if he was listening! I think his smile is meant to communicate comprehension....
