Expanding Your Horizons 2016
Motivating young women in science + mathematics

Inver Hills Community College hosted Expanding Your Horizons, a global STEM education conference, Saturday, April, 30, 2016, on the college's main campus in Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota.

Expanding Your Horizons mission:

Inspiring girls to recognize their potential and pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

From the Expanding Your Horizons website:

Through Expanding Your Horizons (EYH) Network programs, we provide STEM role models and hands-on activities for middle and high school girls. Our ultimate goals is to motivate girls to become innovative and creative thinkers ready to meet 21st century challenges.

The EYH Network’s programs are based on the following assumptions:

1. In order to increase the participation of women in STEM careers, there must be an increase in the pool of qualified women.

2. Intervention strategies can increase the participation of girls in STEM by nurturing their enjoyment and confidence in these fields, by providing STEM career role models, by connecting math and science courses to career opportunities, and by actively encouraging girls to persevere in math and science coursework and other STEM activities.

3. Many of the most effective interventions begin when girls are in middle school.

Currently, EYH conferences for girls are held in 31 states and in Europe and Asia.
