The Forgotten Search
Before scientist Bob Ballard found the wreckage of Titanic in 1985, Scripps oceanographer Fred Spiess agreed to lead a search for Titanic four years earlier. The 1981 cruise, financed by millionaire adventurer Jack Grimm, failed to find the wreckage, though Grimm did claim to have discovered one of the ship's propellers. The cruise did, however, help eliminate a large swath of the North Atlantic Ocean from the list of potential wreckage sites and laid the groundwork for Ballard's find. Mark Olsson, who would go on to found the company Deep Sea Power and Light and have a role in making the James Cameron film "Titanic," was a member of the cruise and shot these photos.
