Elderflower

The Elder tree is also known as the Judas tree, as folklore held that it was the tree from which Judas Iscariot hung himself. The name Elder comes from Anglo-Saxon Æld meaning fire; the hollow stems were used as bellows for starting fires, while the core was used as kindling. Probably best known now for producing flowers which make cordial and elderflower "champagne" and for the berries which make good country wine and cordial. There is a great deal of Folklore and custom attached to the tree for more info see www.treesforlife.org.uk/forest/mythfolk/elder.html
