The Tow boat Mississippi_6440

    Newer Older

I received a citation from a very hostile St. Paul, off duty, police officer today while attempting to take photos of this towboat during a public showing. He singled me out of all the people with cameras taking photos because mine was on the end of an eleven meter pole. I've been stopped by security before without mishap. This guy had a chip on his shoulder, he even tried to break my pole.

wendizzle and micro_margin added this photo to their favorites.

      Unfortunately, Yes!

Wow, You need to go ahead and ad the fact that you where visiting during a public showing of the towboat too in your caption. i would complain to the Corp of Engineers and the St. Paul police. since this was a public showing that was advertised for people to come and tour her.
My self I would like to have come and seen the Mississippi, but i live in West Virginia along the Ohio River. It would have been way to far to travel.

      Thanks Willynwv,
I've added, "during a public showing," to the description. Sorry you weren't able to tour the boat and I'm sorry I wasn't able to either. I had planned to do so after I got my photos. Having received the citation I am prohibited from going near Lamberts Landing for one year. This is the first time in my life that I have ever been treated this way by a police officer.

Have you contacted a lawyer or ombudsman for the police?

MNKiteman: Have you thought about keeping a lawyer with you while you take photos? Kind of like a legal bodyguard.

I wish I could afford one because I sure don't feel safe by myself anymore after this incident. I want to make it clear that I have never had a problem with the police before, anywhere, while taking photos and don't believe that all officers of the law are bad because of one or two bad apples.

I'm sorry to hear about your unfortunate incident.

      File a complaint?

I hope that you have visited a doctor and have your wound medically documented!

Thats just crazy. I run by this landing several times a week. I have seen other tugs parked there and keep thinking I should return to photograph them. Maybe not.

By the way, I am not sure that an officer can issue a "Stay away order". I think it has to be signed by a judge.

      received a citation

I you received a written citation you probably have tomake acourt appearance. I would hire a lawyer and fight it.

In Iowa the favorite charges are "disorderly conduct" and "interference with an official act." They are vague charges and it is your word against the cops.

Ironically there is a very big difference in Army Corps stations. Many of the locks have visitor centers and observation decks but a few such as Keokuk, Iowa are real wankers. Some of it may come down to the local commanders personal preferences.

An offical photography ban will look like this and is primarily limited to military bases:

I just returned from my day in court and I’m happy to say that all charges against me were dropped without appearing before the judge.
