Xhosa Women

Discussing the day at the V&A Waterfront where they have just performed a Tribal Dance for the tourists. These Xhosa women are wearing traditional clothes which includes the blue cotton Shwe-shwe material. This cloth arrived in South Africa with the German Settlers in1858 and because of it's durability and eye-appeal, was soon adopted by the Xhosa woman, who included it in their national dress. The new material was quite stiff when new (due to starch used to preserve it on the long sea-journey to South Africa) The cloth took it's name from the "swishing" sound it made and became "Shwe-shwe". Today the cloth has become quite fashionable again.
