an afternoon in 1970: 1

A visit to one of my favourite childhood haunts, Goulburn North Box, late one afternoon in September 1970.

From the signalbox, 4012 on number 301 goods.

The 40 class entered service in 1951 and were the first main line diesel locos in NSW. They were beaten into Australian main line service (just) by Tasmania's X class (which although only 660hp, were used in main line haulage) and by Commonwealth Railways' GM1 class.

The 40s were withdrawn in 1971, oddly enough before the last steam engines were withdrawn! They were traded in on the 442 class, which reused some of their components.
