Lao hai is made from sticky rice, similar to Japanese sake. In this village, it is then poured into a jar filled with rice husks, which soak up the alcohol. To drink it, you top off the jar with a few cups of water and drink from the bottom using the long bamboo straws. It's good luck to drink the whole jar in one go. Then you stick the straw in another part of the mash and pass it to the next person in the circle. It took us several hours to finish it all off.
