Central Station by John Dobson alterd design 1849 - 1850

'The Central Station, Newcastle upon Tyne'

c.1849-50

This very large view is a version of the second design for Central Station in Newcastle. It was painted by the architect, John Dobson. A slightly simpler version of the station was actually built. The station was part of the transformation of the centre of Newcastle with classical-style stone buildings. The station opened in 1850, and completed the rail link from Edinburgh to London. This view includes the proposed sculpture to the engineer George Stephenson, which was built in 1862.
