Barracuda Tornado

    Newer Older

A "tornado" of schooling barracudas at Sanganeb Reef, Sudan.

This school was huge. Even though it was near the surface, it was clearly visible from 45m down on a dull overcast day.

KG captures, Alexander Yates, and 117 other people added this photo to their favorites.

      Rob,

How did diving in Sudan compare to other places you've been? You're shots make it look great!

Superb angle Rob, Great shot. I like your "tornado" description, the first word in my mind when I saw the thumbnail was "wormhole".

      ScottS,

I really enjoyed diving in Sudan, it is definitely a great dive destination. I can't really comment on how it compares to the Egyptian Red Sea, because I haven't been there, but for sure there are far fewer dive boats in Sudan.

It would be nice to stay a lot longer than the week we did - the conditions were variable. But in the space of four days we saw these barracudas, lots of grey reef sharks, some small schools of hammerheads, silvertip shark, tiger shark, a manta and some bottlenose dolphins. Some of the sites had excellent soft coral growth, too. The diving was often quite deep (40 / 50m for the hammerheads). A rebreather would be have been good to stay deep for longer and get really close to the animals.

Awesome! Truly a vortex to remember! I can just imagine what it was like to swim up through the eye of the vortex.... Do you ever take videos? That would have been incredible as a video.....
