Carte de Viste: Some Guy From York, Pennsylvania
Here's what i think it says:
"This man was born in More More County Ky. He was jerket up on a farm he was an orphen, [sic]
having only one Father and no Mother convicted triared [sic] and hung for the murder of O.O. Ogden, ex Congress Though afterwards pronounced inocent [sic] by O.J. Floursack who was hung for the murder of L.V. Osburn in Tap Tap County Mo. May his spirit rest in cheese"
When i first saw this image (it was in a small cdv album, with some other cdv's and tins), I thought it was a real story about a real person. a historical artifact, if you will. the album page covered up about half the words, and i didn't want to risk trying to take the photo out of the album. so i just bought the whole album, taking a chance that the photo was worth having.
when i got back to my hotel room and looked at the image (it came out of the album quite easily), i saw fairly quickly that the story didn't add up. there is no "More More County, Ky," much less a "Tap Tap County, Mo." and what's that about "rest in cheese"?
then i thought it was a scam, something some dealer had done, to sell the little album. but the album was hardly over-priced (i paid in the neighborhood of $50 for the whole thing. and the ink and the hand seem authentic, of the period. so now I don't know. was some buddy of this fellow just goofing? that's my guess.
as an authentic goof, this is a great image, if I do say so myself. all the other photos in the little book are from the York, Pennsylvania area.
