India on the road, a woman constructor, India, 2001
As Indian women - from a particular Hindu caste - demolish and build houses, it is indeed common to see their children at the working construction site. Caste is a rather old system of racism. In the name of religion, it divided and assigned work according to the colour of the skin. Whiter to the top, and darker to the bottom or even outside the whole socio-political arrangement of labour (Laws of Manu). During Independence, Caste abolition was a prominent concern for the father of the Indian nation: Mahatma Gandhi. The current Indian Constitution prohibited caste. However, it still prevails in Indian society to a sometimes alarming extent.
