Italian Easter Basket Cookies 5

a. Butter two baking sheets, and set aside.
b. Sift together into a large bowl:
5 C flour
1 C sugar
5 t baking powder
1/2 t salt
c. Cut 1 C unsalted butter into the flour mixture, until it resembles coarse meal.
d. Make a depression in the center, and add
4 beaten eggs
1 t vanilla extract.
Blend thoroughly with a fork. During the blending, add 1 t milk several times as needed, to form a soft but stiff dough.
e. Form the dough into a ball, and roll it out on a floured surface to 1/2-inch thick.
f. Stamp out twelve 3-inch rounds, and place each equally spaced on the baking pans.
g. Press a colored egg in the center of each round.
h. If necessary, form a ball with the remaining dough, and then roll it to a 1/2 thickness.
i. Cut 1/2-inch strips into 24 6-inch lengths.
j. Drape two lengths over each egg to form a cross.
k. Moisten joined dough with milk and press together.
l. Bake at 375 degrees 15 to 20 minutes, until lightly browned.
