Trooping the Colour, 1972 massed bands

The 1972 Trooping with the 1st Battalion, Coldstream Guards Colour on parade. There were 8 guards found from the 2nd Bn Grenadiers, 1st and 2nd Bns Coldstream and 1st Bn Scots Guards. Guards bands back then consisted of over 50 members plus 4 Corps of drums plus the massed mounted bands of the Household cavalry. The Coldstream had both 1st and 2nd Bn Corps of drums on parade. The massed bands are shown here marching off ahead of HM the Queen. The Drum majors in state dress can be identified by their sashes and the badge affixed to their aprons. This was magnificent sight and sound much bigger than today where the bands have been reduced to about 30 musicians each.
