The Constable Tower

Barnard Castle

This tower controlled the main entrance from the Outer Ward to the Middle Ward of the castle. Less than half of the original structure survives today, but it is known that the tower was square, with an entrance passage flanked by guard rooms on the ground floor. There were at least another two storeys above.

By the southern side of the tower two arched culverts drained the moat between the Middle and Outer Wards.
