Several wetland areas in the Netherlands have been selected as potential reintroduction areas for the Otter. Because of it’s good quality and a good connectivity the wetlands in the Northeast of the province Overijssel and the Southwest of the province Fryslan have been selected as primary reintroduction area. The number of otters now surpasses the number of released otters. Reproduction is high, with about 90% of the adult females giving birth every year. Latest news Otters in the Netherlands. The Small-clawed Otter, is the smallest otter species in the world, weighing less that 5 kg. It lives in freshwater, swamps and wetlands. Due to ongoing habitat loss and pollution, the otter is evaluated as vulnerable on the Red List of Threatened Species. They are very active during daytime in remote areas which are free of human disturbance. They are excellent swimmers and can dive under water for about 6 to 8 minutes. They produce small amounts of feces which are well-known as spraint by otter researchers. The spraints are one of important way for communication among the otters. Other otter could indicate the presence of other individual based on the olfactory and visual of the spraints. Generally, they sleep and resting on land either above ground or in the dens. They often sleep in areas with moderate disturbance. Otters are most social animals. They live in extended family groups of about 12 individuals. They are often seen playing and sliding on muddy banks and in the water in regions where they frequently visit or live. Otter feed mainly on frog and fish. They also feed on insects and small fish. They supplement their diet with snakes and frogs too. However, they may uproot plants in the wetlands.

Photo taken at the Natuurpark Lelystad. In this semi-natural woodland you may encounter elks, deer, bisons, Przewalski's horses, storks, otters, and wild swans. Because of the vastness and the numerous trees and wetlands, some animals may not show themselves to visitors. Who walks through the park will not believe what he sees. It is hard to believe that this area came into existence of the making of a highway nearby. There are not that many places in the Netherlands where you will find yourself standing face to face with an otter. The Otter is so hard to shoot. He's moving so fast at 468 mm zoom, ISO80, 1/125s, f/4.4

Foto gemaakt in natuurpark in Flevoland.
