Did I miss my flight?
Hilo International Airport Tarmac: This week I was working on the Big Isle of Hawaii. On my return trip the Hilo Airport was practically empty! On a Friday no less! I had arrived early because of the new TSA proceedures. And wanted to relax a little bit. All of this was just to find out my flight was delayed.
Hawaii has been hit the hardest by this recession and there was absolutely nothing the state could have done. The whole economy is largely based on tourism. And with tourists vacationing more and closer to the local it was inevitable Hawaii’s economy would be hit. Hawaii was once an agricultural state with the main exports being Pineapples and Sugar. But with competition overseas pretty much undercutting the cost of productions and distribution there was no way Hawaii could compete.
As it stands, Pineapple and Sugar are a vanishing commodity if not already gone. Tourism being what it is our state is now diversifying into green energy and technology. From Aquaculture and wind/solar power to participating in developing batteries for electric powered cars. Hawaii is now competing to be one of the “greenest” states in America.
