Tayto was set up by Mr.Joe Murphy in 1954, at that time most crisps were imported from the U.K and were unflavoured. Joe saw a niche in the Irish Market and set up his own crisp factory. This lead to the development of the first ever Cheese & Onion flavoured crisps and the brand name, which has now become synonymous with crisps, TAYTO. Production of the Cheese & Onion flavour crisps started in a factory in O'Rahilly's of Moore Street, Dublin. There the crisps were made by hand to a very high quality, this was the start to the great tasting crisps.

Tayto have been producing crisps since 1954, when Joe Murphy made the first packet of Tayto crisps. At that time, the range of snack foods in Ireland was limited to an unflavoured bag of crisps containing a small blue bag of salt to enhance the flavour. The crisps were hand packed in waxed greaseproof paper, hand sealed and delivered to the retailer in an airtight tin to help maintain their freshness.
The production and packaging process has changed significantly over the years. As a result of improved technology and innovation, Tayto has expanded and improved its production operations considerably.
