An old friend of ours is the manager of NYLO a new upscale loft-style hotel. We were given a heads-up about a special email offer for a discounted room and eagerly took advantage of it last night. The hotel is decorated in a funky, but warm and comfortable loft style. The beds are huge and extremely comfy. A friendly little touch was the Teddy bear wearing a NYLO spa robe waiting on the bed. We had a great view of the Pawtuxet River from our room on the fourth floor.
The staff were warm and friendly. When we requested a couple of wine glasses and a bottle opener be brought to our room they were personally delivered by Ben, the very handsome front desk associate.
We had eaten dinner prior to check in because frankly, we weren't sure we would be able to afford the dining room of NYLO. We did choose to eat our breakfast there however and it turned out to be an excellent choice, and not as pricey as we expected.
The dining room has a great view of the river and is decorated in an eclectic mix of industrial concrete, funky seaside cottage, and shabby rococo chic. Believe me, it works! The waitress was friendly and had a perfect touch with coffee refills--right there when we needed it without being intrusive.
I chose the yogurt parfait, for $5 and the Two Potato Hash for $2. The parfait, served in a large martini glass, is made with Stonyfield Farms Organic yogurt which had clearly been strained through cheesecloth for extra creaminess and richness (a favorite technique I use at home). Along with the expected strawberries and blueberries was a nice scattering of blackberries and rasberries. The locally made granola had just the right amount of sweetness that I didn't need to add the honey which came individually served in a sealed jar (I brought that home, plus a couple of the preserves which were were served the same way). I expected the potato hash to be a couple of hash brown patties but was delighted when a bowl filled with chunks of nicely roasted sweet potatoes and red potatoes arrived. The potatoes were nicely crispy on the outside and deliciously tender on the inside and flavored with very thin slivers of green pepper and onion. Delicious and plentiful enough that I left a bit behind. Stuart ordered his standard fair of two eggs over easy, toast, and breakfast meat. In this case the meat was applewood smoked bacon, very lean, and his toast was a Thomas' English muffin. This breakfast came with the potato hash and was $8. The coffee was very good, with a choice of medium or dark roast (or decaff or tea). I originally ordered the dark roast but was told I would have to wait a couple of minutes for new pot to be brewed (a good sign). I decided to go with the medium roast which was plenty flavorful and strong. The coffee was $2 and as mentioned earlier there were plenty of refills.
When we first entered the hotel, I was very intrigued by the lobby which functions as a small library/lounge. There were plenty of titles that captured my interest and had I had a bit more time I would have definitely taken advantage of this amenity.
There is a DJ on Fridays and Saturdays and they will soon be experimenting with a Thursday DJ night as well.
