Jersey City Peregrine Falcons, July 2013
Made a few Sunday morning trips to Jersey City this month to check up on the falcon family. The first visit on July 14 proved to be the most active. Had a brief look at the adult female on the NW corner of 101 Hudson, staying in the shade and out of sight of the young male. He was on a low building by the water front, and took flight when the adult male circled overhead a few times. There might've been a food delivery beforehand, as the fledgling was carrying a small prey item when he first appeared off the low building's roof. He soared higher and higher, with the adult monitoring from above. The fledgling hung out near the top of 101 Hudson, flying out a few times to circle around the building.
A follow-up visit on July 21 yielded another sighting of the fledgling, flying in high from the north along the Hudson River walkway, trailing an adult. It was hard to tell, but the fledgling appeared to be carrying prey. He circled around the GS tower a few blocks south of 101 Hudson, and landed on a southeast corner ledge. An adult continued circling the tower, then disappeared. Later, both adults were seen at 101 Hudson, seeking shade.
An additional visit on July 28 brought no sightings of the fledgling, but both adults were present at 101 Hudson. The adult male made brief flights to nearby 10 Exchange Place in the morning, while the adult female took flight just after noon, effortlessly floating on the strong southerly winds.
