Spiranthes tuberosa

This beautiful little orchid (also called Little Ladies'-tresses) was photographed in a dry, open woodland, characterized by abundant pignut hickory in the canopy and Pennsylvania sedge on the ground. The orchids were fairly abundant at the site, but one had to look closely to see their delicate white spires above the cushions of Pennsylvania sedge. Flowering spurge and butterfly pea were both in bloom when this photo was taken, as was Appalachian fameflower on nearby bedrock outcrops.
