Edward L. Porter
Carte de visite of Edward Leighton Porter by Bendann Bros. of Baltimore, Md. Born and raised in New London, Connecticut, Porter graduated from Yale in 1857. He taught school in Virginia and studied law between graduation and the start of the Civil War. In April 1861 he joined the Second Connecticut Infantry for a three-month term of enlistment. He returned to the army in 1862 as first lieutenant and adjutant of the Eighteenth Connecticut Infantry. He later advanced to captain of Company F.
On June 15, 1863, he was shot and killed in action during the final charge at the Second Battle of Winchester. He was twenty-six.
