1st Ave Protected Lane
The 1st Ave protected bike lane is nearly complete from 61st Street to 72nd. Many of the ped islands are installed, and the lane has been painted green. In terms of striping, the only thing left is the bicycle symbols. The floating parking is already in effect, but some deliveries are still occurring in the mixing zone. This is merely an enforcement issue. This is very exciting progress.
A few issues still exist. There is a big gap between the sharrows on 1st Ave leading up to 57th, and the beginning of the protected lane on 61st. At 57th the sharrows simply end, with no indication that a much nicer facility is only a few blocks away.
In addition, the section of 1st Ave, north of 72nd is still awful, even with the new buffer. The lane is constantly blocked by double parked delivery trucks, and the concrete surface is generally in poor condition. At least this section makes an obvious connection to the portected lane.
