Antiochian Orthodox Founders, 1923

The founders of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America, Archdeacon Antony Bashir, Metropolitan Gerasimos Messara, and Archimandrite Victor Abo-Assaley. This photo was taken in New York in 1923. Gerasimos founded the archdiocese the next year on behalf of the patriarchate, putting Victor in charge as its first metropolitan. Antony would succeed him in 1936.

A copy of this photo was given to the Antiochian Metropolitan Archbishop of North America, Philip (Saliba), in May of 2007. It was later featured in the September 2007 issue of the archdiocesan magazine, The Word.
