Whipmawhopmagate is reputedly York's shortest street, with the longest name. The origin of the name is not certain, but in 1505 is was called
" Whitnourwhatnourgate" - " Neither a street nor anything else ". Later it was changed to Whipmawhopmagate, its present name. Reputedly, in previous centuries wrongdoers were publicly flogged nearby leading to its current name. The name of the street has nothing to do with a gateway or gate, it is derived from the Viking name for a street, " gata". For such a short street it has so many attractions and so many things are forbidden in it. If you visit York, you must visit this street!
