The Great Mosaic Disaster in Chamaeleon

    Newer Older

Sometimes, things don't turn out as they ought ...

It started as something promising:, The region is full of wonders, and there was nearly full coverage in the HLA, unfortunately it soon turned out there were quite a few 'gaps' between tiles that maybe weren't so obvious looking at the footprint, plus the gaps apparently inherent to the ACS/WFC instrument. .A number of prominent optical aberrations were also present in the data. I kept on going anyway.

Disaster struck further as I brought together my two greyscale mosaics, and started playing with saturation and contrast on the narrow range of usable data, revealing and amplifying subtle coloration tiling within individual ACS/WFC frames..

It was a learning experience though !

All data from the ACS/WFC, proposal 10138.

I like the blanks and missing pieces of the puzzle.. it's like a work of art for that reason.

I think the tiling, like the previous commenter, is a "happy accident"! It adds some very compelling geometry to the photo.
