Marble grave stele of a little girl
Greek, c. 450-440 BC
Found on the island of Paros
The gentle gravity of this child is beautifully expressed through her sweet farewell to her pet doves.
Many of the more skillful stone carvers came from the Cycladic Islands, where marble was plentiful. The creator of this funerary stele could very well have been one of the artists who congregated in Athens to decorate the Parthenon in the third quarter of the fifth century BC
