Powerplant - Building 29 - Kings Park Psychiatric Center - Long Island, New York
Building 29 was the last of four powerplants that operated at the Kings Park institution. It originally worked on coal, but was converted to oil. The oil storage tanks can be seen to the right of the stack. The facility was serviced by a dedicated spur of the Long Island Railroad which delivered coal to the plant by way of tracks that ran alongside. I spoke to an engineer who worked for a company that bid on the conversion of the plant years back. He said that the sulfur from the coal burning at the plant could be seen, at times, drifting through the nearby town.
The plant supplied both electricity and steam to the hospital's buildings, which was delivered by hundreds of yards of underground tunnels.
