Buckley Island

Buckley Island is an island on the Ohio River between Marietta Ohio and Williamstown West Virginia. The Interstate 77 bridge over the Ohio crosses the island's western portion (shown in the left background). Throughout its history, Buckley Island has also been known as Kerrs Island and Meigs Island and once had an amusement park built on the southern end. The remains of the old Buckley house and a couple of barns still exist on what was once rich farmland.

The island is now part of the Ohio River Islands National Wildlife Refuge and can only be accessed by boat. The Island is considered a rare natural habitat that over the years has been losing its shoreline, particularly since the present dam system raised the water level in the river by ten feet. Because of that the US Senate approved a bill from Senator Robert Byrd (June 2007) that gave 1.4 million dollars to protect the island.
