This little box turtle looks to have had a rough life. It is anybody's guess as to the story behind the disheveled condition of its shell. Perhaps while crossing the road at an earlier time he was found by something quite different than me. Part of the shell is missing and the remainder of it overall is scuffed and peeled away. I picked him up and moved him to the other side of the road. The surface was so hot that my shoes left impression marks as the sticky tar stuck to the bottom of my feet.
