Floyd Bennett Field/Marine Parkway Bridge/Fort Tilden
After walking around Dead Horse Bay (see pics in separate album), our group went to Floyd Bennett Field, New York City's first municipal airport, later a naval air station, and is now part of the Gateway National Recreation Area. Then we crossed the Marine Parkway-Gil Hodges Memorial Bridge (originally and often referred to as the Marine Parkway Bridge), a vertical-lift bridge that crosses Rockaway Inlet and connects the Rockaway Peninsula in Queens, with the Marine Parkway to Floyd Bennett Field, Flatbush Avenue, and the Marine Park neighborhood in Brooklyn. After crossing the bridge, we stopped briefly in Fort Tilden, a former US Army installation but is also now part of the Gateway National Recreation Area.
