How far is Zurich from the alps?

    Newer Older

Waid, Zürich-Wipkingen, Switzerland; Blick auf Innenstadt, Seebecken und Glarner Alpen.

People who have never been to Zurich often ask about the mountains. "They're quite a bit away, it takes at least an hour to get to the closest ski resort," I usually explain.

I'm starting to realize why some may find this statement absurd.

damn, I still haven't made it up there when the weather was like this... HDR? or just slightly surreal? ;-)

Absolutely surreal, believe me, because this is how it was that day. I just underexposed a bit to not blow out the sky (being somewhat allergic to HDR).

I was in the area for other reasons and glanced over the city as I always do – and my jaw just dropped. You could practically reach out and grab those mountains. Luckily, I had the camera in my bag.

Nice take! It's a really nice location. This is my take from 2004:

Oh wow, amazing! Now you have me regretting that I did not wait for the setting of the sun… ;-)

Timing is important, but in various respects. In fact, I had to go there and re-shoot the image for a publication that required a higher resolution than this initial photo made with an EOS 10D. I never got the same light and feel again, even by going there on multiple days and having similar weather.
