Pearl Street Books; La Crosse, Wisconsin

Pearl Street Books comes with everything a used bookstore should have. There are floor to ceiling shelves accessible by tall ladders. The wooden floors sometimes give an agreeable creak when you walk. A curved stairway leads into the mysterious darkness of the second floor. Every breath you take has a slight fragrance of well-read age. The owner is amiable, knows his trade well, and is happy to chat on a slow rainy afternoon. Most important, of course, are the books. Lots of books, stacked and shelved in every available space. Books on every conceivable topic and dating back to Gutenberg. Or so I wish. I buy a book or two every time I'm in La Crosse. You could do the same, if ever you pass that way.
