The vehicle turning left at the light dates from 1954. It is either a Hillman Minx Estate Car (station wagon) or a Commer Van (panel truck). They shared the same body, differing only in number of windows and seats. The radiator grill was used for the 1954 model year only. Thus I'd date this as mid-1950s.

    Hi,
    Thanks for adding your photo.

Very unusual angle used for this super picture.

St Thomas's Hospital in rear, with a significant section of wards/units missing, presumably under reconstruction at this time?

A Cannon Row Police officer would be posted 24/7 on a protection post whilst the scaffolding remained in situ on 'Big Ben' now called 'Elizabeth Tower'.

    Len,

Where do you think this was taken from? Above St Stephen's Tavern?
  • Leonard Bentley PRO 1y

    John,
Yes, St. Stephen's Tavern has two balconies one on the first floor and one on the second floor overlooking Bridge Street.

I had confidence that your vast knowledge of public houses would come to the fore! ;o))

    Hi,
The work on the Palace of Westminster started in 1952, the Victoria Tower was the first part of the Palace to be clad in scaffolding. The scaffolding on Big Ben was removed in June 1957 and with the information from jamu98765, this photograph was taken between 1954 and 1957.
