Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus) 22 Feb-08-58
Blue Whale (Balaenoptera musculus). Dorsal fin With a remora sucker fish (approx 100mm) attached to it. The relationship between the fish and host is not fully understood but is thought to be a form of commensalism. The remora gains but the host loosing little other than hydrodynamic efficiency. The remora may be (Remora australis) common name whalesucker. Remora are seen to actively move around the body's of swimming whales but show a preference for the rear of the dorsal fin where the force of water may be lower. Sea of Cortez, Baja California, Mexico.
