HUGE Giraffe - Right next to the Safari Bus!

This fully grown male giraffe came right up to the bus....unfortunately for me again on the wrong side! This is my shots thru the windows across the bus.

Views at Werribee Open Range Zoo, 30km south-west of Melbourne city - parto of the Melbourne Zoos complex - the other two being the main zoo at Parkville, and the Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary 60 km east of Melbourne. The Werribee open range zoo is on about 550 hectares of land, and a large amount is set up as African plains where famous large African mammals roam - hippopotumas, eland, rhino, zebra, and giraffe to name a number.

The public is taken on 45 min safari drive thru the open range, visiting all but the lions and the cheetah!

This ENORMOUS giraffe, about 18 feet tall loped right up to the full-size safari bus that I was on. This view is right across the bus from the opposite side. Its enormous!

A bit of trivia for you:

You might remember a very famous picture of a mother giraffe kissing a new-born calf on its head - that was an incredibly popular and high selling poster.

Well.....that baby is now a full-grown male giraffe called Malcolm, and lives at Melbourne Zoo!

He is now 18 feet tall - a massive giraffe!

I don't think this is Malcolm....but I will check when I am next at the Zoo.
